1. PURE SPA RELAXATION

Enjoy 360° all-round views of the snow-capped mountains of South Tyrol while immersed in a bubbling pool. South Tyrol's star spa resorts will allow you this little luxury. Whether at the thermal baths at Meran, Cron 4 at Kronplatz or Acquarena in Brixen – huge glass windows will reassure you that the pleasant shiver you experience doesn't come from the sub-zero temperatures outside, but from alternating between the sauna, resting room and a relaxing dip in the outdoor pool.

2. One horsepower mountain transport

Let's wager a step into the open air, equipped with a cosy woollen blanket and strong four-legged friend to set the pace. A horse and cart ride on the Seiser Alm will provide views par excellence. A glass of prosecco in between stroking Haflinger ponies and a photo opportunity? There are lots of mountain huts that provide the perfect setting for that.

3. Skating on the ice

Those brave souls who wish to feel the invigorating cold air in their faces will discover a real winter wonderland: ice-skating (unfortunately the page is not available in English, but it lists all the skating opportunities in South Tyrol) on one of the many frozen lakes. Reschensee lake is definitely one of the most extraordinary, with just the tip of the church tower of the sunken village of Graun rising out of the lake.

4. Alternating slow and fast

Let's not forget the classic: sledging. Going peacefully up the hill, then whooshing down winding runs, safe in the knowledge that the next hut to warm you up again and set you up for your next descent is not far away.

5. All inclusive free of charge

Yes, even cute little helpers have a right to a holiday and a spot of relaxation after all the stress of Christmas. The only reindeer herd in Italy lives on the Rotwand mountain, which visitors may admire after reaching it easily on foot. Simple winter walks like these can be done all over South Tyrol. It costs practically nothing, you don't need any special equipment and the start of most paths may be reached by bus.

6. Braving the snow

Walkers on snow shoes are kind and considerate to the environment. These slightly comic 'plates' attached to the bottoms of your boots help a lot. Instead of sinking deep into the snow, you can get across it easily. If you don't have any snow shoes you can simply hire them and enjoy the free 'Panorama, absolute peace and quiet far away from hustle and bustle' package. So, rebels will never get cold feet – rather, they dare to look for the special things in winter in South Tyrol – and will see that it's worth it!
