Story from Bauer Eva, Haus Bauer – Ritten/Renon:

Sinfully expensive toilet paper

When I was young it was common, like in most South Tyrolean establishment, to help out whenever it was needed. My sister and I helped cleaning the rooms, and it was really fun. During my childhood I saw many tourists go in and out of our home. Still today I remember some of those clients.

I have a fond memory of a nice lady, middle-aged; she was a little bizarre and covered with precious jewelry. She had the funny habit to wrap her jewels in toilet paper and leave it on the dresser in her room. Than on day at some point one of her valuable rings got lost. – Like it was swallowed by the ground –

The whole room – what am I saying – the whole house has been searched `from` top to bottom. Resentfully she gave me the blame to have thrown away the ring together with the toilet paper.

Willy-nilly we had to go and get the huge garbage can `from` the street and spread all the stinky waste on the floor in the garage. We looked for this ring everywhere – but no ring – it disappeared. It was all for nothing

All of a sudden the lady came along and held the ring in her hand, she lost it, while she took off her boots the evening before – it slipped inside the lining –

Actually no wonder –she was a little tipsy that night, which is what I thought – I surely didn’t say it.

Stinky but visibly relieved, we sat on the floor in the garage. The same night the lady invited us for a pizza, to make up for her mistake. We couldn’t be mad at her at all.
Wooded hill with castle ruin, surrounded by vineyards and layered mountains in soft light.
