As we climb up the windy road to Völs, we are greeted by the imposing Schlern massif, having us looking forward to a cosy weekend at Villa Erna!

A holiday bolthole

Erna Karbon welcomes us with a warm smile. “Hello Norah, it's great that you've brought your balance bike with you. We've got lots of space on our terrace for wheeling around!“ My daughter grins like the Cheshire cat. “I've already bought breakfast for you tomorrow morning, so you don't need to go to the shops today“. This holiday has got off to a good start.

We gradually settle into our weekend abode and make ourselves comfortable. The holiday flat features ample space for the three of us and the large terrace affords spectacular views of the proud Santner peak. Unemcumbered views!

...and magic may be found in silence

In the afternoon we drive to the Seiser Alm plateau. Wafts of mist create an air of mystery - the season has yet to start and the silence takes its beneficial effect. No cars, no noise, no phones ringing – just the three of us and the odd tractor chugging past.

Ready for all kinds of weather, we go for a walk on Europe's largest high mountain pasture, past a few horses, donkeys and cows, which our daughter finds “cool“. A few dandelion clocks and minutes spent collecting stones later, and we drive back to Seis-Siusi and enjoy the obligatory afternoon espresso and slice of cake on the terrace of a cafe, which has a playground so that the whole family can relax.

After a satisfying pizza

Back in our little nest, we manage to play a game of cards before our stomachs start rumbling. Fortunately, Erna has recommended a nearby pizzeria – and we let our hunger lead us there. We can always eat a pizza!

With full bellies, a sense of contentment and exhaustion, we fall into our beds and drift off into the world of dreams.

“Good morning“ we hear. Norah is the first to wake up, of course. So it's time to get up and get our yummy breakfast! Fresh eggs, muesli, ham, 'speck', cheese, yoghurt, milk, coffee, apple juice and more: Erna has really thought of everyting. And the weather bodes well for a family day out. Ready for take off!
