Why do we celebrate the Grape Festival?
The origins of the Merano Grape Festival date all the way back to
1886. The main purpose of the event was to celebrate the end of the grape harvest and to express gratitude for a bountiful yield. Originally, the festival was organised by the farmers, who had spent the entire year working hard in the fields and were now ready to take a break and celebrate. So, we can rightfully say that the Grape Festival in Merano is the
oldest harvest festival in all of South Tyrol.
From harvest celebration to grand parade
Since its inception, the Grape Festival has become one of South Tyrol's most renowned and cherished events. Held in the historic old town of Merano, the festival’s main attraction is a grand parade featuring
music bands, Bohemian ensembles, traditional and folk-dance groups, horseback riders, and elaborately decorated floats. This transforms the charming streets and alleys of South Tyrol's elegant spa town into a vibrant celebration. The parade begins at Vinschgau Gate, winds through Via delle Corse, Corso Libertà, and the Passer Promenade, and concludes at the city’s municipal theatre. Don’t miss the chance to admire all the diverse traditional costumes, colorful embroidery, and stunning decorations. A standout feature is the
giant apple crown made from authentic South Tyrolean apples. You’ll be captivated by all the floats and intricate details!
