Summertime means family time! But did you know that the Schnalstal Valley has so much more to offer than glaciers, high peaks and the place where Ötzi was discovered? This unspoilt valley is a true paradise for family adventures in the mountains.

Unforgettable family fun in the Schnalstal Valley

Juval Castle stands majestically at the entrance to the Schnalstal Valley, with plenty of (family) adventures awaiting you beyond. This unspoilt valley, some 20 kilometres in length, certainly leaves no room for boredom – promise! With leisurely family hikes, tours of mysterious glaciers, a journey back in time to the Stone Age and thrills galore for adrenalin junkies – here there is something for everyone!

In search of Mother Nature
Countless hiking trails, rustic mountain pastures and farms to explore are just some of the adventures awaiting in the Schnalstal Valley. One of my favourite walks is the circular trail around the Vernagt Reservoir. A well-marked path follows the shores of the shining, turquoise-blue lake, past (if you are lucky) grazing alpacas, over wobbly suspension bridges and through enchanted forests. After around two hours of circuiting the lake, you return to the dam wall and your starting point. I personally most look forward to stopping at the historic Finailhof afterwards: with its wonderful views of lake and mountains and delicious traditional farm fare, it is a wonderful way to end the day!

Back to the Stone Age
At the Schnalstal Valley’s “archeoParc”, located in the village of Unser Frau, you can make an interactive journey back in time to the Stone Age and walk in the footsteps of Ötzi. The famous Man from the Ice was discovered in 1991 just a few kilometres away from here, not far from Similaun. The archaeological open-air museum truly conveys what life was like here around 5,300 years ago, with interactive exhibitions, workshops and activities for children bringing history alive as the time flies past. Simultaneously an entertaining and informative experience for young and old alike!

Up on high
For families with slightly older children or teenagers, the Schnalstal Valley has plenty by way of thrills – at the Ötzi Rope Park, for example! Even the smallest of climbing fans will have fun on the high-ropes courses with their varying levels of difficulty, while the giant swing and three ziplines are the icing on the cake! And, for speed freaks, I definitely recommend an action-packed descent on the Lazaun mountain carts – brisk breeze and wide grin included!

Of strong women, cold feet and warm hearts
I’m sitting across Rosa and Ulrike in their cosy snug, calmly stirring my afternoon coffee. A little chat is simply part of the fun when I’m on holiday. My gaze wanders out of the window from time to time. While the lovely view of the Latemar ...
